Allnorth Vancouver Participates In CANStruction 2012
Posted on 25.09.2013
4,500 cans of Maple Leaf Flakes of Ham and Flakes of Turkey later, our Vancouver team members have created a masterpiece – Vancouver’s Mighty Salmon! Our team consisted of: Sara Cooper, Carl Hendriks, Kim Morgan, and Martin Rhodes. A special thank you also to Andy Chang, Amy Heigl, Michelle Nguyen, and Kathleen Love for helping to construct this beautiful Salmon display.
What is Canstruction?
“Canstruction, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that holds annual design and build competitions to construct fantastic, giant sized, structures made entirely out of canned food. In each city after the structures are built and the winners declared the creations go on view to the general public as giant art exhibits. At the close of the competitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to the local food banks for distribution to community emergency feeding programs.” (Canstruction website)
This year our team was inspired to honor British Columbia’s Pacific Salmon. While the Pacific Salmon can be found in the waters off many faraway lands, the people of British Columbia and Vancouver have forever taken a special ownership of this fish. Historically the Pacific Salmon has provided sustenance for locals which led to it being used as a subject in traditional arts; we hope to echo these two characteristics of the salmon with our sculpture and subsequent food bank donation. Inspired by the style of great local artists like Bill Reid, the team chosen red, black, and white to be the colors of the structure.
This structure, and others like it, are on display at the Fortis BC building lobby (1111 West Georgia St. Vancouver). Once the display is over, the designs will be disassembled, and the cans will then be donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. 20 teams are participating in the 2012 event.
