Allnorth was engaged by the County of Grande Prairie No. 1 to design and reconstruct a section of Range Road 63 South from Hwy 672 To Twp Rd 734.
The existing road had several sections with shallow road ditches and minimal grade lines, resulting in poor drainage, road failure and deterioration. Culverts also had drainage issues due to overgrown vegetation and debris. In addition, wash boarding was caused due to road subgrade material, moisture content and the amount of gravel present.
The scope of Allnorth’s responsibilities comprised of executing the preliminary engineering and detailed design, contract administration, project management and construction supervision, construction surveying and quality assurance testing, as well as performing all construction inspections.
The new design widened the road, improved the final grade and reestablished the crown, as well as geometrically improving the approaches and accesses. Side slopes were also improved.
Challenges included maintaining public access throughout the project, construction traffic accommodation and safety, utilities overhead power line and equipment access and safety. Allnorth developed a strategy to minimize overall disruption to traffic, including maintaining an open lane for the duration of the construction. Allnorth also managed effective utility coordination and ensured the geotechnical investigation accurately verified the causes of deterioration and failure of the gravel.
