The Kicking Horse Canyon, located just east of Golden, BC is one of the most rugged and scenic sections to be found on the Trans-Canada Highway. As a tourist and commercial transportation corridor, the highway carries more than 10,000 vehicles daily during the summer.
Three phases of work have transformed 21 kilometres of narrow, winding two-lane highway into a modern four-lane, 100 km/h standard. Construction of the fourth and final phase to complete the remaining – and most difficult – 4.8km is expected to be substantially complete in winter 2023-2024. This project is part of the comprehensive Highway 1 – Kamloops to Alberta – Four Laning Program. Considering the location and terrain, the focus of this program is improvements to safety, cost-effectiveness and as little disruption as possible to highway users and the community.
The scope of work for Phase 4 includes:
- Upgrading approximately 4.8km of highway through the most challenging section of the canyon to improve safety.
- Realigning 13 curves and widening the highway to four lanes with median barriers and wider shoulders to accommodate cyclists.
- Mitigating rock fall and avalanche hazards with bridges, rock catchment ditches and other measures.
- The construction of numerous retaining walls, and the installation of wildlife exclusion fencing and passages.
Allnorth provided qualified technicians to confirm and document the compaction of placed materials using the nuclear method, as well as performing on-site concrete testing as per CSA (Canadian Standards Association) or CCIL (Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories) specifications. All work is being completed in conformity with relevant ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and/or CSA specifications, as well as client-specific specifications. Allnorth has an on-site CCIL Certified Materials Testing Laboratory to perform proctor tests, sieve analysis and concrete strength analysis as required.
The challenge of this work is substantial and involves significant traffic disruptions ranging from stoppages to overnight closures and even multi-day closures during off-peak shoulder season. To address these challenges, Allnorth assigned an experienced team capable of managing schedule demands and accelerated timelines. Additional resources are available to accommodate the specific scheduling requirements and support smooth project execution.
