In the fall of 2018, Allnorth was engaged by Essity to perform a feasibility study for its Columbus project; a 100 TPD bleached wheat straw pulping installation that was being considered for Essity’s Mannheim facility. The installation would utilize a process to create high-quality bleached pulp out of regionally available wheat straw (an alternative fiber to wood), reducing demand for market pulp at Essity’s Mannheim tissue-making facility. The project was quickly approved and detailed engineering kicked off in the spring of 2019.
Allnorth’s first task on the project was to simulate and define the process design for the facility, incorporating design inputs from major equipment suppliers. Allnorth progressed into civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and controls engineering, as well as the specification, evaluation and selection of the equipment required for the project. In total there were over 50 pumps, 30 atmospheric tanks, three major equipment packages, and countless other pieces of process, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation equipment to specify and procure. There were also the structures, piping, cabling, and so on to support, connect and monitor the equipment.
In addition to detailed engineering and procurement, Allnorth’s involvement in the project is expected to carry through in support of the construction and commissioning phases of the project in an advisory capacity.
In October 2020, Allnorth reached a major milestone with the completion of detailed engineering for this project. The use of wheat straw to produce high-quality pulp for use in tissue products is just one of the innovative ways Essity is supporting its sustainability ambitions and contributing to a circular economy. Allnorth is proud to be part of the journey, and our team is excited to see this pioneering project having completed construction in 2021.
