Located on the northwest coast of British Columbia (BC), Rio Tinto Alcan’s aluminum smelter in Kitimat is one of the largest manufacturing complexes in the province. It is powered by the Kemano Powerhouse, situated in Kemano, BC, which receives water from the Nechako Reservoir via a single tunnel that is over 60 years old.
The Kemano Second Tunnel (T2) Project involves the completion of the remaining 7.6 kilometre portion of a second tunnel that will feed the smelter’s Kemano Powerhouse.
Allnorth was retained by Hatch Ltd., the company representative for Rio Tinto Alcan, to provide third-party construction surveying services for the Kemano T2 Project.
Allnorth’s scope of work included:
- Underground survey works (quality assurance checks);
- Topographic surveys;
- Construction progress surveys and QA support;
- Road repair quantity surveys.
The underground works included quality assurance survey services to verify the Main Civil Works (MCW) Contractor’s survey control, and complete tunnel alignment checks at predetermined stages of construction.
