The City of Grande Prairie (City) determined that the existing lighting on three baseball fields at the South Bear Creek Baseball Diamonds (SBCBD) provide insufficient illumination. As the existing luminaires are no longer available, the City engaged Wave Engineering to evaluate a cost-effective solution for alternate illumination options to meet minimum lighting requirements for a recreational field.
As part of the evaluation process, Allnorth was engaged to provide structural assessment and evaluation of the existing poles and bases to determine if reuse of the existing infrastructure was feasible and what modifications or foundations would be required.
The project site is located on a retired landfill and as such, the area is very sensitive to any ground disturbance that may result from a geotechnical investigation or the installation of new foundations. Environmental testing was completed to determine the concentration of underground methane gas at the project site and contingency plans were prepared in the event of a release of methane gas. Geotechnical testing was completed by ParklandGEO on the sub-soil conditions to provide foundation design parameters.
In addition to reviewing existing drawings, completing a detailed site inspection of the existing foundations, evaluation of existing foundations and providing alternate designs, Allnorth also completed a detailed site survey and prepared a base plan identifying all utilities and existing infrastructure for planning and design purposes. Allnorth provided foundation upgrade design drawings and construction specifications in support of Wave Engineering preparing a tender package for the lighting installation.
