This project was to repair concrete piers, damaged due to tidal zone erosion as well as freeze-thaw. The facility is a 660m² two-level building that is part of the Marine Institute of Memorial University marine research and teaching park at Holyrood, NL. Associated work included embankment erosion repairs and timber ramp repairs. The piers were reinforced and jacketed with new concrete.
Allnorth was engaged as Prime Consultant by the Marine Institute for pre-design investigations, design development, tendering, project management, and contract administration which included periodic site inspections. Allnorth’s designer, assigned to this project was a member of the facility design team when the building was originally construction in 2010 on an existing concrete foundation.
Challenges on the project included:
- Scheduling site inspections and construction in the tidal zone: schedules were adjusted to optimize the work during accessible low tide periods.
- Safety: workers and inspectors were required to wear proper personal protective equipment at all times, including approved flotation devices.
