Falls Mountain Coal, Inc. owned Willow Creek open pit metallurgical coal mine near Chetwynd BC.

As part of their coal mine development, Falls Mountain Coal Inc. needed to grade separate the existing CN Rail tracks and the Willow Creek Forest Service Road. The resulting overpass was 46 metres long with three spans. It was a steel/concrete composite structure founded on driven steel pile piers and spread footing abutments.

Allnotrth was hired to design the structure and manage the construction. The overall scope of work included:

  • Topographical surveys
  • Conceptual design
  • Detailed design
  • Cost estimating
  • Coordinating approvals with CN Rail
  • Preparing tender documents
  • Construction management

Noteworthy elements of the project included an understanding of grade separation issues such as clearance requirements, CN Rail standards, CN Rail approval process and managing settlements due to substantial earthworks on each end of the grade separation approach.
