Operations at Vale’s open pit mine and concentrator at Voisey’s Bay in Labrador began in 2005. This 6,000 tonnes per day facility produces two types of concentrate: nickel-cobalt-copper concentrate and copper concentrate. Significant infrastructure is required to support the mine and concentrator, and to ensure a safe and comfortable living environment for the people that work at the site.

Allnorth was retained by Vale to perform construction quality assurance testing and inspection services, both on the surface and underground, at the Voisey’s Bay mine expansion site.  This multi-year contract supports the project with quality testing and inspection of the construction materials.

Located on the east coast of Labrador, the Voisey’s Bay mine site is considered a brownfield site, with construction taking place at the same time as open pit mining operations.

Allnorth’s previous experience delivering projects in similar  geographic areas has prepared our team for the challenges in this remote northern site. Seasonal freight and minimal allowance for winter freight on the concentrate ice breaker, fly-in/fly-out for the project team, and extreme arctic weather, are examples of some of the unique features of this project.

The on-site laboratory is operated by technicians in rotation to cover all the demands related to the project’s construction schedule.
