Pope & Talbot Ltd. (Harmac Division) retained the services of Allnorth Consultants Limited to update and validate its millwide thermal energy and power balance and to conduct a millwide energy audit. One of the key findings of the audit was that mill’s existing governor control strategy was unnecessarily restricting the turbine’s extraction flow. Following programming modifications to the governor (at zero capital cost), the mill’s incremental power generation by improved by approximately 0.7 MW in the summer and 2.1 MW in the winter. Annual savings in excess of 11 GWh/ year were achieved as a result of these modifications.
